Successful interoperability testing completed between ADCs
DV6000 digital transport system and Ciscos world-class switch and universal
broadband routers
MINNEAPOLIS and SAN JOSE, Calif., December 2, 1998 ADC Telecommunications, Inc.
(NASDAQ:ADCT; www.adc.com) and Cisco Systems, Inc., announced today a suite of solutions
for cable television operators that delivers advanced data and digital video solutions.
This suite of solutions combines ADCs industry-leading DV6000 video transmission and
distribution system and ADCs EtherRing data transmission and distribution system
with Ciscos world-class networking products and technologies including the Cisco
12000 Gigabit Switch Router (GSR), the Catalyst® 8500 Switch Router and
Ciscos family of Universal Broadband Routers (uBRs).
"The integrated ADC/Cisco products are an immediate and cost-effective solution
for existing DV6000 customers," said Paul Bosco, general manager of Ciscos
Cable Products and Solutions Business Unit. "By adding packet data transport
capabilities to the DV6000, cable operators can combine existing analog video distribution
and transmission networks with new digital video and packet data services including
broadband data, interactive on-line, ad insertion and video-on-demand services."
"ADC and Cisco are working to develop network solutions that deliver analog and
digital video services alongside packet data and on-line services, all on one,
cost-effective transport platform," said Vivek Ragavan, president of ADCs
Residential Broadband Group. "By integrating the DV6000 and Ciscos network
solutions, a cable operator can now build streamlined networks that deliver analog and
digital video, video-on-demand, advertisement insertion, high-speed on-line data and IP
Internet access services all on one transport network."
Fiber availability issues, high capital costs and operational complexity have delayed
cable operators ability to bring new services to market. The ADC/Cisco suite of
cable TV solutions enables cable operators to cost effectively deliver new services on the
same transmission and distribution infrastructure that carries broadcast video services
today.
The ADC/Cisco solutions integrate carrier-class, telecommunications products with
end-to-end solutions to support new service delivery on operational cable infrastructures.
The Cisco solution includes the industry leading Cisco 12000 GSR for high traffic network
nodes, the Catalyst 8500 Switch Router, a combination of Internet Protocol (IP) data
services and ATM, private virtual circuit (PVC) services, the Cisco uBR family of hub and
headend platforms, Data-over-Cable Service Interface Specification (DOCSIS)/International
Telecommunications Union (ITU) J.112-compliant set-top boxes and support for cable modems,
voice-over-IP (VoIP) and telephony enhancements. Transport is provided by the ADC DV6000
digital transport platform using ADC EtherRing technologies that support broadband IP or a
combination of IP and ATM configurations. The DV6000/EtherRing-based solution provides
cable operators with a new, cost-effective way to build Cisco Powered Networks at data
rates ranging from 100 Mbps to 28.8 Gbps.
"The DV6000 is the most widely deployed uncompressed digital video transmission
system in the industry today. By integrating the DV6000 system with Ciscos
state-of-the-art routing and switching products, service providers have the tools to
deliver reliable, low-cost, broadband services. We are excited that ADC and Cisco are
collaborating to bring these solutions to our customers. Successful compatibility testing
and installed customer systems have shown that products from both companies are ready for
integrated deployment," said Michael Coden, inventor of EtherRing technology and
general manager of Codenoll Technologies, a business unit of ADC.
Cisco and ADC will demonstrate the interoperability of their new solutions at the
Western Cable Show, December 2 through 4, 1998, in Anaheim, Calif.
