HARTFORD, Conn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 9, 2005--Distinct in the
Hartford skyline, Phoenix's headquarters at One American Row is now a
national treasure after being added to the National Register of
Historic Places. Managed by the National Park Service, the National
Register of Historic Places is the nation's official list of
historical resources worthy of preservation.
Prized as a stellar example of the Modernist style, with its
unique form and two-sided lenticular plan, the building was designed
by Max Abramovitz and opened in 1963. Abramovitz - widely acclaimed
for his role in designing two of New York City's landmarks, the United
Nations and Lincoln Center - envisioned the locally dubbed "boat
building" as a reflection of a daring and progressive company. His
"cutting edge" concept of more than 40 years ago remains stunningly
contemporary.
"The commission of this building was significant on many fronts.
It cemented Phoenix's commitment to the renewal of Hartford, where the
company was founded in 1851, and reflected its forward-thinking and
innovative business approach. Today, we're making our own statement of
commitment as we undertake the first major renovation of the building
and bring all of our Connecticut operations back to the city," said
Dona D. Young, chairman, president and chief executive officer.
To mark the occasion of the National Register listing, The Phoenix
Foundation is granting $10,000 to the Hartford Preservation Alliance,
an organization dedicated to preserving and enhancing Hartford's
architectural assets.
