SANTA CLARA, Calif., March 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Motorola (NYSE: MOT) today
announced a relationship with MySQL AB, an Open Source database management
system provider, that calls for Motorola to offer application developers the
MySQL database as part of a developers' toolkit from Motorola's iDEN®
Subscriber Group. Using this database, developers will be able to write
applications that allow users to wirelessly access information in databases
through Java 2 Platform, Micro Edition (J2ME) technology-enabled
devices. MySQL was originally developed to handle very large databases much
faster than existing solutions and has been successfully used in highly
demanding production environments for several years.
This relationship has been established to facilitate the development of
applications for Motorola's J2ME technology-enabled multiple communication
handsets. These handsets will be available beginning in April through iDEN
network operators including Nextel Communications, Southern LINC and Pacific
Wireless Technologies in the United States and TELUS in Canada. The MySQL
database allows developers to create client/server applications which access
information wirelessly from host servers. MySQL AB will offer qualified
support to iDEN developers.
"Motorola is supporting the Open Source developer community by providing
developers with the MySQL database as part of the developers' toolkit," said
Bill Werner, corporate vice president of Motorola and general manager of the
Motorola iDEN Subscriber Group. "As professionals become more mobile,
companies are recognizing a need to keep workers connected with corporate
networks to remain productive."
"Though under constant development, MySQL today offers a rich and very
useful set of functions," said David Axmark, co-founder of MySQL AB. "Its
connectivity, speed, and security makes MySQL highly suited for accessing
databases on the Internet. MySQL will provide developers with a database
application to work with while creating networked, database-centric
applications, allowing developers to more easily deploy their wireless
solutions."
