Motorola Wins Multi-Million Dollar Malaysian Contract for GSM Expansion And GPRS Projects

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill., Feb. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Motorola Inc.'s (NYSE: MOT) Global Telecom Solutions Sector (GTSS), a leading supplier of the world's GSM (Global System for Mobile Communication) digital wireless network infrastructure, has signed a major contract valued at more than US $130 million with Maxis Communications Bhd, Malaysia's leading communications and information services company.

This expansion program is being designed to increase network capacity to accommodate in excess of three million subscribers within the next two to three years and to further enhance the overall system performance of Maxis' national GSM digital network. Motorola also will supply Maxis with a General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) network overlay, using the Motorola/Cisco solution, to facilitate high-speed wireless data transfer.

Motorola will deploy its new generation of 3G-ready Horizon platform equipment in dense urban areas and in rural parts of the country. With the new equipment and Motorola's turnkey implementation of network quality initiatives, Maxis will be well positioned for the transition to third generation or 3G technologies.

"Our fundamental goal at Motorola is to ensure that operators like Maxis have the technology it takes to deliver excellent coverage and quality to consumers. By expanding the Maxis network with Motorola's industry-leading GSM solution, and by bringing GPRS service to Malaysia, Maxis and its growing subscriber base is moving quickly toward the next generation of wireless communication," said Simon Leung, Motorola corporate vice president and general manager of the Asia Pacific Region for the Telecom Carriers Solutions Group (TCSG).

"Network quality and product leadership, especially in the area of mobile data services, are of utmost importance to Maxis.
